WIP - Phoenix Hearts XVIII - An Adaptive Audio Showcase
A downloadable showcase for Windows and macOS
*This is a work in progress and subject to significant improvements*
This is a university student project designed to showcase adaptive audio in a unique format using Wwise and Unity. I am a composer and this is my first time making something from scratch using Unity!
I chose to make a playable audio showcase as my final major project at uni so that I could get a better understanding of Unity and Wwise. We only touched on game engines briefly during my time at the university and Wwise wasn't part of the curriculum at all, so essentially this project was about my own development and learning.
Basically, this is just an audio showcase disguised as a game. Stylistically, it is supposed to simulate action JRPGs such as Star Ocean, Xenoblade Chronicles, Kingdom Hearts, Tales of series etc., hence the satirical title. At the minute it looks more like a visual novel, but there will be a UI overhaul soon that hopefully represents the intended genre.
At this point, the music has not been mixed due to time constraints, so please bear in mind that the audio is not in an optimal state. This will be rectified in the next update.
This project will be updated and expanded periodically with improvements and new content.
Eventually, I will release all the audio assets in a downloadable licence-free package for either a small pre-determined fee or as a free/optional donation based model.
Here’s what you can expect from future updates:
• UI upgrade to look more representative of a real video game.
• Short music cues in a variety of styles for skits/cutscenes/mini-games. (Comedy, Sad, Romance, Dark etc.)
• Tailored music cues for towns/cities, exploration, dungeons, battles and unique bosses based on biome/area type. (Think generic RPG tropes like desert, snowfield, forest, cave, volcano, space etc.)
• Unique boss themes will have multiple music and transition cues. (for multi-phase combat)
• Event-based music cues. (Generic story beats. i.e - Ballroom waltz, castle coronation, death scene, villain themes etc.)
• Character main themes and battle variations including respective leitmotifs for trance/limit break style systems.
• SFX - original foley and sound design. (Footsteps, attacks, magic, monster cries and attacks, all the essentials)
• Ambience tailored carefully for each location.
• Stingers for specific situations (Defeated in battle, victory, sleep lullaby, game-over, etc.)
• Audio filters based on player state (Low health, under water, etc.)
• And more!!
Hope you enjoy what you hear. If you have any questions or if you are a composer interested in doing something similar and would like to pick my brain on how to do so, please feel free to get in touch. My e-mail is subject to change, but for now you can contact me at b.cordiner91@gmail.com for any enquiries.
Cheers!

I intended to release this via WebGL, but it turns out Wwise does not support this feature yet. As far as I'm aware, this is something that is being rectified in the next major release, so future iterations of this project will be released in WebGL format.
